Subtle Textures

Journal Entry: Wed May 7, 2008, 8:22 PM
DEADLINE IS LOOMING....NOT A LOT OF ENTRIES....PRETTY PLEASE WON'T YOU ENTER???? The theme isn't as hard as some are making it seem, really!

CHALLENGE RULES

Your entry should contain one or more SUBTLE textures.

(If you are unsure what I mean, look at these galleries for examples in a variety of media where subtle textures enhance their works: *kayceeus, *Leonidafremov, =sheispretty, `annejulie, *Mollinda and *faboarts to name just a few. EDIT: Look down at the comments, I've given some more general dA galleries you can look to for inspiration as well.)

The challenge is open to any member of deviantArt.
We accept any non-animated visual works.
Your entry does NOT have to be a new deviation.

DEADLINE

The deadline to submit an entry to this challenge is May 13.

LEVELS

There will be two challenge levels - beginner and experienced.

This is to allow artists who are less experienced in their chosen medium to be judged separately from those artists who are more experienced and/or skilled in their chosen medium.

Whatever level you enter is completely up to you! If you don't indicate which level you are entering, your submission will be placed in the experienced level.

VOTING PERIOD

At the end of the challenge a one-week voting period will be announced in our journal.

Everyone who submits an entry to the challenge is REQUIRED to vote. These are the only votes that will be accepted.

If you enter, but do NOT vote, then your entry will be disqualified from the challenge. The voting period will be announced ONLY in our journal so be sure to check back here after the deadline!

CHALLENGE RESULTS

At the end of the voting period I will tally the votes. The two deviations in the beginner level and the two deviations in the experienced level with the most votes will be declared the "winners" and be uploaded to our gallery.

The deviation with the most votes overall will be displayed as our featured deviation until the end of the next challenge.

TO ENTER

Simply leave a comment on this journal with a link to your deviation and mention whether you are entering the beginner or experienced level!

What are the criteria for deciding whether somone is "beginner" or "experienced"? Also I notice that all the deviants you linked to are photomanipulators - is this challenge only for photomanipulation? If not, how does it apply to photography or traditional art?

And by "it" I mean "subtle textures".

leonidafremov does paintings, and annejulie, Mollinda, and faboarts do traditional work.

Q: "What are the criteria for deciding whether somone is "beginner" or "experienced"?"

A: There is no set criteria - "Whatever level you enter is completely up to you!" You are the best judge of where you feel you are in mastering the medium you are working in.

Q: "Also I notice that all the deviants you linked to are photomanipulators..."

A: Not true - check those links I gave again. There are in fact 2 photomanipulators, 2 traditional artists and the other two provide a mix of digital and traditional art in mixed medias. I was certain to choose a variety.

Q: "...- is this challenge only for photomanipulation? If not, how does it apply to photography or traditional art?"

A: No, as stated in the journal, these challenges are open to any non-animated visual art. You can see a few examples of the use of texture for traditional art in the links I provided. For photography you can try browsing these galleries for some examples: Digital Dark Room, Abstract and Surreal Photography and of course Texture Resources

Hope that helps :D

Ahhh I checked the first three or four of those links but for some reason the paintings looked like very elaborate manips to me

So for traditional art, does something like this contain "subtle textures"? Sorry to keep asking but it's quite hard to pin down what you mean just by looking at lots of examples and trying to spot the parallels in between... I think I'm getting closer though!

Or is it sort of like the background on [link] ? (which is dig art but I think it might be the sort of thing you mean)

Also, for photography I have looked at the textures gallery but would the photography be limited to just a picture of something textured - I mean, how could you build up around it and have something a bit more complex than this or this? Or can't you?

Read the definition of Subtle and the definition of Texture that is what I mean by subtle texture. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not trying to be condescending, I just think that you are over thinking this by trying to pinpoint the challenge theme as some sort of art technique that can be defined. That was not my intent at all!

So, let's take this discussion down a different path. I see from a quick peek at your gallery that most of your works are traditional drawings. So, let's assume for a moment that you are wanting to participate in this challenge here. Wouldn't you be drawing something? Wouldn't it be on paper? Think about how your pencil, ink, etc. interacts with the texture on the paper and how that effects the end result of your work.

I hope I've gotten your creative juices flowing - 'cause my brain's toast lol :D
